How to Choose a Launch X431: PAD vs PRO vs Creader, Decided by the Work You Bill For

The specification tables all look similar. What actually separates a €150 scanner from a €2,800 tablet is whether you need to command modules, code them,…

Every week we get the same question in a slightly different form: which X431 should I buy? The specification tables on retailer sites are nearly identical, so people end up comparing things that do not decide anything — screen size, memory, the number of listed functions. Here is the way we actually think about it, which starts with the invoices a workshop writes rather than with the hardware.

The three tiers, defined by capability not price

Read and reset (Creader / CRP class, roughly $59–430). These tools read every system, clear faults, graph live data and run a fixed set of service resets: oil, EPB, throttle, DPF, sometimes injector coding. If your work is servicing, inspection, quick fault confirmation, ABS and airbag diagnostics, this tier does the job, and the money you save is real money.

Command and code (PRO class, roughly $890–1,950). This is where a tool starts generating new service lines. Bidirectional control lets you command actuators and run component tests; ECU coding lets you fit a replacement module and configure it rather than sending the car to a dealer. If you charge for module replacement, DPF work or fault diagnosis that goes beyond reading a code, the tier pays for itself.

Program online, cover protected vehicles (PAD class, roughly $1,870–2,800). Online programming through the manufacturer server, the broadest coverage licence, gateway-protected vehicles such as FCA/Stellantis, and heavy-duty capability through the HD module. This tier is for multi-brand workshops with high vehicle throughput, and for specialists who bill programming work as a distinct line.

Three questions that decide it faster

1. Do you need to tell the car what to do, or only ask it what is wrong? If you never command actuators or code modules, stop at the Creader tier; a PAD in that workshop sits mostly idle.

2. What is the vehicle mix? A bay full of German cars is well served by a brand-focused Creader Elite at a fraction of the price. A mix of everything, including Stellantis and commercials, pushes you towards the PAD tier — gateway access and licence breadth are exactly what you are paying for.

3. Will you sell programming as a service? If yes, you need both the hardware and an active subscription, and the subscription is a recurring cost you must price into the job. Buyers who skip this calculation are the ones who feel disappointed later, because online programming is the most commonly misunderstood feature in this category.

What we tell customers who are unsure

Start one tier lower than you think you need and upgrade when the work appears. Tools hold reasonable value, and the biggest waste in this category is a €2,800 tablet doing €150 of work. The exception is key and immobilizer work, where a cheap purchase usually means buying twice — that job genuinely requires the programming hardware, not a better scanner.

If you tell us your brands, model years and the services you bill for, we will name the two models that fit and one that does not, with the reasoning. It is a shorter conversation than reading four specification tables.
