Launch Region Activation Explained — and Why an Unregistered Device Is a Dead End

Launch devices are registered to a region. Activate outside it and the manufacturer can block the tool, gateways and immobilizer functions will not…

This is the single most important technical fact about buying a Launch tool, and the one most often glossed over in listings: the device is registered to a region, and that registration is not cosmetic. We have written this page so you can hold any seller to the same standard we hold ourselves to.

What region registration controls

Four things depend on the region a device is registered to:

  • Activation itself. A device activated from a country other than its registered region can be blocked by the manufacturer. This is a policy vendors enforce, not a rumour.
  • Gateway authorizations. On protected brands — FCA/Stellantis being the clearest example in Europe — the security gateway authorization activates only on devices registered in the eligible region.
  • Function licences. Immobilizer functions, advanced programming and some subscription tiers are licensed per region.
  • Software updates. Different regions are served by different update infrastructure, and an incorrect registration shows up as failed or extremely slow updates.

The process that avoids all of it

Registration is a pre-shipping step, not an after-sales fix, because once a serial number is activated a seller cannot reverse it. The correct sequence is short:

  1. Order the model you need for your vehicle mix.
  2. Tell the seller the country where the tool will be used.
  3. The seller registers the serial number to that region through Launch's official channel.
  4. You receive the activation confirmation together with the invoice and serial numbers, before dispatch.

Keep that confirmation. It is what resolves any later question about your device's status, and it is what we submit if a warranty or licence issue ever arises.

How to test a seller in one email

Ask two questions before you pay: Will you register the device to my country before shipping, and will you send me the confirmation in writing? A seller who handles this answers immediately and precisely, because the answer is a routine part of their process. A seller who replies that registration is not needed, or that it is something you do yourself after arrival, is telling you that they are shipping you a device whose status they cannot vouch for. In this category that is not a small risk — it is the difference between a tool that earns and a tool that sits in a drawer.

Buying second-hand or from a marketplace

With second-hand units the question is sharper, because a device may already be registered elsewhere. Before buying, ask for the serial number's registration status and confirmation that it can be licensed in your region. We decline to list any trade-in we cannot verify for exactly this reason.
