Abonnements, Renewal Cards und Funktionsautorisierungen: Was Sie wirklich kaufen
Diagnostic equipment is unusual in one respect: you buy the hardware once and the software on a clock. Understanding three different products stops a workshop from either overpaying or, more commonly, discovering that a tool has quietly stopped covering new vehicles.
Renewal card
A renewal card extends the update period on a device. It is tied to the tool's serial number and unlocks continued software updates and coverage for newly released vehicle models. Practically, this is the item that keeps an existing tool useful for another season of new model years.
Annual subscription
Subscriptions extend update and function access for a specific platform over a fixed term — one year, typically. Some are tool-specific: a subscription for a motorcycle platform is not interchangeable with a car platform subscription, which is one of the most common mistaken purchases we see. Subscriptions are bound to a serial number and cannot normally be transferred to new hardware, so plan hardware changes with that constraint in mind.
Function authorization
Some capabilities are not part of any subscription but purchased individually as an authorization against a specific device and region. The clearest European example is the security gateway authorization needed on FCA/Stellantis vehicles: without it, the diagnostic tool cannot perform protected functions on those cars at all. These authorizations are the clearest case where region registration and purchase history determine whether you can buy the item at all.
Credit packages for remote work
If you sell remote support as a service — a specialist at one site handling a problem at another through the customer's interface module — you buy activation credits in advance and consume them per session. For workshops that bill that work, prepaid credit is simply a fixed cost against billable revenue, and it is delivered digitally with no shipping or customs involvement.
The expensive mistake
Buying a subscription for the wrong serial number or the wrong platform. It is expensive because activation is irreversible: the seller cannot move it, and the manufacturer will not reverse it. Every time we quote one of these products we ask for the serial number and the device model first, even when the customer is confident — a two-line email prevents a wasted purchase.
How to plan the cost
Treat software as a running cost of the tool, not a one-off. A workshop running three professional tools should be budgeting the renewal cycle annually and buying before expiry, because coverage gaps appear exactly when a new model year drives into the bay. If you tell us your fleet of tools and their current expiry dates, we will build the schedule for you and quote the renewals together.
